Environment & Sustainability

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)

LEED is a suite of rating systems for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings, homes and neighborhoods. CHRIS Kids Main Office and CHRIS Counseling Center are achieving LEED Gold Certification. There are several opportunities to learn more about LEED and our commitment to the environment when you come to tour CHRIS Kids. There are many displays/signs and other features visable to the public.

Sustainable Sites

Implementation:

  • Pervious Paving - The pervious paving in the parking lot collects up to 3 inches of rain water, which greatly reduces the amount of stormwater running off-site.
  • Cool Roof - The cool roof reflects the sun's rays, maximizing energy savings and reducing the amount of heat the building contributes to the atmosphere.

Water Efficiency

Implementation:

  • Greywater Cistern - A greywater cistern collecting water from showers, sinks and waterfountains is used to flush toilets, reducing the building's water usage.
  • Plumbing Fixtures - Low flow sinks and toilets help to reduce the building's water usage.  Together with the cistern, a 50% water savings is achieved.

Earth & Atmosphere

Implementation:

  • Solar Panels - 99 solar panels are installed on the roof, offseting 8% of the building's total energy consumption.
  • Elevator - The elevator uses 1/3 of the energy of a standard hydraulic elevator, and does not use polluting oil.

Materials & Resources

Implementation:

  • Recycled Content Carpet - The recycled content in the carpet reduces the amount of waste in the landfill and minimizes the need for virgin material production.
  • Construction Waste - 65% of the total construction waste (119 tons) was diverted from the landfill and recycled.

Indoor Air Quality

Implementation:

  • Low VOC paints, coatings, & sealants Interior paints, coatings, and sealants have reduced VOC contaminants (volatile organic compounds), contributing to better indoor air quality during and after construction.
  • Views and Daylighting The majority of work spaces are provided in areas with daylighting and views which provides for a healthier and more vibrant workspace.

EarthCraft Certifications

EarthCraftEarthCraft is the Southeast’s standard for green building, pairing building science with regional know-how. CHRIS Kids Summit Trail Apartment Community and All Eight JourneyZ Group Homes are exquisitely EarthCraft designed and renovated. Summit Trail Apartment Community achieves the Department of Energy’s Builders Challenge Multi-Family, ENERGY STAR, and EarthCraft Multi-Family certifications. It is the first multifamily design in the United States to meet the Builders Challenge standards. The goal is to be 30% more energy-efficient. Come visit us and learn more about our programs and their 'green design.'
