Group Counseling

Group counseling involves a small group of people (usually 6-10) who meet together regularly, along with one or two highly trained clinical staff to learn to cope with or adjust to a variety of life’s challenges. These groups take a variety of forms. Some focus on a specific topic or problem, while others address a number of different concerns. Under the direction of the group facilitators, the group is able to give support, offer alternatives, gently confront and promote healing.  Curriculum-based group counseling includes:

Coming Out Group

Thoughts and feelings about sexuality and the possibility of coming out can feel challenging, confusing, and possibly even exhilarating. This support group for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) youth gives the opportunity to share with a small group of peers about sexuality and the coming out journey in a confidential setting.

Anger Management

Anger is a powerful energy that can be a destructive force or a channel for change. These groups discuss how to recognize personal triggers, gain control over angry expressions, develop resolution and communication skills, develop appropriate outlets, use anger productively and more.

The Seven Challenges® Program

This group is designed specifically for adolescents with drug problems. It strives to motivate a decision and commitment to change - and to support success in implementing desired changes.  This program is listed as an evidence-based program in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration’s National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices for adolescents.

Personal Boundaries

The key to ensuring relationships are mutually respectful, supportive and caring is setting personal boundaries. Boundaries set the limits for acceptable behavior for each individual and for those around them.

Grief and Trauma

Many people experience great loss or have painful memories of the past which cause difficulty managing day to day life.  Sometimes these feelings and memories intrude in the present and do not resolve on their own. There is a deeper process going on and talking with a trained therapist can be very helpful to healing and to successful functioning.

Girls Trauma Recovery Empowerment Model (G-TREM)

This  10-16 week girls group for girls led by a licensed therapist addresses issues of physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse with girls and women who have histories of trauma, and for whom traditional recovery work has been unavailable or ineffective.
