Trauma Informed Care
All of CK’s programs and services are based in trauma informed care. This care is directed by an understanding of neurological, biological, psychological and social effects of trauma. We assess children to learn when trauma occurred in their lives and how long it lasted. Some trauma includes: sexual, physical, emotional abuse, severe neglect, loss, witnessing violence, substance abuse, imprisoned family member, and abandonment. Understanding when trauma occurred helps us tailor our responses, treatment and services. Trauma-informed assessments and interventions always acknowledges, respects, and integrates cultural values, beliefs, and practices.
Preventing and Detecting Abuse
CK’s programs raise awareness of the prevalence and consequences of child sexual, physical and emotional abuse by educating the community about the steps to prevent, recognize and react responsibly. Education and training are integral components of any plan to reduce the incidence of child abuse and neglect. Abuse and neglect can be prevented. Some of the training courses offered include:
- Darkness to Light’s Stewards of Children - is the only nationally available program scientifically proven to increase knowledge, improve attitudes and change child-protective behaviors. This revolutionary program is for any responsible adult who cares about the welfare of children. It is also appropriate for youth-serving organizations (sports leagues, day care centers, after school programs, children’s clubs, church groups and more).
Diversity and Cultural Competency
Using the words of one of our clients, CK provides a "judgement free zone." All individuals are accepted for who they are, where they are. This acceptance provides the psychological and emotional safety necessary to create a therapeutic foundation critical for healing and growth. CK defines cultural competency as a person’s ability to interact effectively with people who have different heritages, ethnicities, religions, traditions, practices and/or belief systems to understand how to communicate respect and acceptance to people across cultures. CK celebrates - race, color, creed, citizenship status, national origin, sex, age, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical, mental and/or medical condition, marital status or veteran status. Diversity and Cultural Competency are embedded in CK’s values, code of ethics, its policy on equal employment opportunities and in training.
Professional Development
Ongoing learning opportunities and professional development are critical for our clients, staff and community leaders. CK strives to have an active role in shaping the future of the nonprofit sector. Professional development supports the growth, learning, and development of current and future generations. Some of the training courses offered include:
Workforce Development
CK believes that lifelong learning is important to ensure future generations are prepared for the workforce. Career development begins at the high school level and then continues to specialized programs. CK’s goal is to prepare children and youth with the knowledge, skills and abilities needed for today’s global economy. These children and youth ultimately drive economic growth throughout Georgia.
